Gymnastics Falls To Southern Conn. State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Justine Basley captured the all-around with a score of 37.225 to lead the way for the Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics team in a convincing 182.975-172.225 victory over West Chester University on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls captured first place in all four events and improved to 6-0 on the season with the victory. West Chester fell to 0-2 on the year.

Both Jenna Ciatto (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and Colleen Sheehan (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks East) finished tied for second in the all-around with an identical score of 34.025. Rachel Chilla (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) finished runner-up in the vault with a 9.125 while Ellise Kaplowitz (S. Brunswick, N.J.) placed third on the balance beam with a 9.275.

It marked the second straight meet in which Sheehan has recorded a 34.025 all-around score while Chilla and Ciatto each registered season highs on the vault – Chilla (9.125) and Ciatto (8.925). Kaplowitz, competing on the beam for the first time this winter, topped 9.0.

West Chester will be back in action looking for its first victory of the season on Sunday, Jan. 27 when the Golden Rams travel to Brown for a 1 p.m. meet.
